Melt

or: Not all icecream is created equal

Most of us who have either lived or traveled to warmer parts of the world have indulged in a roadside ice-cream sold from within an icecream van a la Mr Whippy, Mr Wimpy and in HK’s case, Mr Softee.

Mauritius also has their fair share of these style vans however this week, I was treated to something a little more traditional.

As we were driving along, there was a guy on a tricycle with a canopied freezer section reading “Super Icecream” mounted on the back two wheels.

We had seen him earlier serving ice-creams and now he was on his way to a new destination along the beachfront.

We flagged him down to stop and we pulled over too.

I asked for a single icecream.

He put his scoop into a plastic bag of what I’m guessing was raspberry jam and then smeared this over the top of the homemade vanilla icecream that was in the chilled container.

He then scooped out some of the mix and filled the base of my cone with that before forming a rounded ball for the top.

It was a hot day and this was a fabulous and unexpected treat.

A taste sensation.

I would even call it super.

Thanks to Chet Faker / Nick Murphy for the title to this post. He went by the name Chet Faker for this particular song and since 2016, has been using Nick Murphy. Great Australian artist!
