Manic Monday

Sunday is traditionally the day of rest. In an effort to fit more in each week this has shortened from a day to the evening. I’d like a longer evening.

Friday night was my work’s annual dinner. With an 80s theme and the associated music and dress, time was spent reminiscing and pondering the important things such as the benefits of simultaneously wearing two pairs of neon socks rolled down neatly (not folded!) to make sure both colours could be seen.

Unlike last year’s event, this one was without partners. Many other companies have not held events at all due to the financial markets and in recognition of the redundancies they’ve implemented. It has put a sober spin on what is the HK silly season (Christmas until after Chinese New Year).

After my late night ferry trip home, I was up at 7am on Saturday to catch the ferry to Discovery Bay. We were taking our dog to play at the Waves’ place while the humans went to Ap Lei Chau furniture shopping. The early ferry was needed because only buses can drive into Discovery Bay and dogs aren’t allowed on those. Mr Shallot was meeting us with the car on the other side of the Discovery Bay tunnel.

Around 9.30am we set off shopping. Horizon Plaza is a 28 floor outlet complex of furniture, clothes and other bits and pieces. Underneath is a Ferrari store. Starting at the top, we gradually worked our way down. We began to tire so skipped a few levels. On one level we were bypassing, the lift doors opened to reveal a fantastic gun-metal grey bed setting. We stepped out.

After the shock of the price, we left the store. With a sideways glance, a toy dog caught my eye. My curiosity piqued, I walked into what appeared to be a small store selling pet knickknacks, including life jackets.

I had actually stumbled onto a pet nirvana – Whiskers n Paws. This was easily the largest pet store I have seen in HK with all the associated accessories including human clothing. There was also an outdoor area where we saw a trainer with dogs. On Sundays, people buy wine at the store next door and hotdogs next to that one and come into this outdoor area where the HK Dog Rescue people host Adoption Day from 2-5pm.

Saturday night back at the Waves’, we tried some Disaster Bay chilli wine (bought earlier) with fish cakes and pizza. We were having a sleepover so we could take our dog to the vet on Sunday.

Another late night and early start, we were at the dog park Sunday morning, then to the vet followed by the hairdresser to catch up on celebrity gossip, have a cut and a relaxing shampoo.

We’re finally home now and I’m not ready to start work tomorrow. There’s an early morning meeting and I’m having a check up at the dentist. I’d like a sleep-in.

“Just another Manic Monday oh oh, wish it were Sunday oh oh oh oh…”
