Material Girl

As far as my technological life goes, I am now complete.

Many, many, many years ago now, I received an electronic organiser. That was the beginning of my desire to have one gadget that could do everything. I spoke to all and sundry about this gadget and clearly, one of those people happened to work for Apple. Just as well because while I’m great with the idea and knowing what I want, I definitely don’t have the skills to put it altogether.

While chatting about this all-in-one gadget, I also began to speak of an electronic reader. Something portable, that could store all my books and even surf the net (I started speaking about the net after it was invented though so I can’t really take much credit for that). A gadget that wouldn’t give me sore eyes and may even speed my reading, something low cost compared to paper books and as a bonus, it would save trees. This time someone at Amazon heard me.

However, they didn’t realise that I was located in Australia (at the time) so they made the kindle incredibly difficult to get. As a further tease, they then released a better model and then even one that diagrams could be easily viewed. What was going to be next? Touch screen? Colour? Would they be legally importable anytime in my lifetime?

Finally my wait was over.

I happened to be on the net at the end of my work day (www.smh.com.au) catching up on things from home when it flashed on screen that Amazon were now taking orders for their international shipping of the kindle 2.

I ordered and so began a very long wait.

Two weeks later it arrived. I downloaded my first book (one of my current book club novels) and began. I’m loving it and have just found that I can also sync it with my iPhoneand it will then be able to tell on both gadgets where I’m up to in the book. Very impressive though I’m not sure why I’d be without the kindle and only have the phone but you never know so naturally I’ll have to test it all out.

Now I’ve started speaking a bit more loudly about the teleporter – the trip to Australia is a long one so this would be quite convenient. I need a large whiteboard to nut out my idea further, in the meantime, I’d set it so side trips were possible, my iPhone wouldn’t interfere with my rematerialisation and I could read the kindle on the way.

Let’s see who’s listening this time.
