Circle of Expats

Or: The Importance Of Continuing to Make New Friends

To the tune of Circle of Life

From the day we arrive in Hong Kong
And blinking, step into the sun
There’s more to see than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done
There’s far too much to take in here
More friends to find than can ever be found
With the sun rolling high
Through the pollution-filled sky
Once again we say, “see you around”.

It’s the Circle of Expats
And it moves us all
To other countries after Hong Kong
Some friends leave, others stay on
The transient nature leads to no cliques
As we remember what it’s like to not belong
In the Circle
The Circle of Expats.

It’s the Circle of Expats
And it moves us all
We are there for each other
Through new beginnings and endings
Our friends are our families
On the path to other destinations
In the Circle
The Circle of Expats.

* With thanks to Elton John for heavy inspiration for this post. I’ve been thinking about this for most of today as another friend is leaving soon.
