I Know What I Like

or: Eating When You’re Not Hungry

One of the 974 things I like about Thailand is the food.

The curries, the vegetables, the stir fries, the fruits, the noodles, the rice, the soups, the lemongrass. I could eat Thai food indefinitely. It is one of the cuisines that if I could only eat this sort for the rest of my life, I’d hope for a really, really long life. I have a few countries’ foods that fall into this category.

One of the things I find interesting is that I eat a lot less of it when I’m actually in the country than I would if I was buying Thai food anywhere else. It’s definitely not cost related as the food is very cheap here compared to what I’d pay for it in HK. Maybe it’s because I know I can get it anytime for however long I’m here though I think it is more weather related.

This time of year, it is starting to get warmer. It’s about 30 degrees centigrade at the moment and drops about two degrees at night. The room I’m staying in has two fans and a cold shower in the bathroom. That shower is bliss even though it feels kind of warm. It’s nice because the humidity here is significantly less than what I have in HK at this temperature though it could do with a more regular breeze to help the sweat evaporate faster. I can’t complain though since at least it does evaporate.

In hotter weather, I always have the tendency to want to eat less. I just don’t seem to feel as hungry. Thirsty? Yes – if I’ve delayed drinking for some odd reason. Like being underwater which isn’t really that odd a reason. Hungry? Sometimes.

As long as I have a decent breakfast (I’ve found a place that does a great muesli, fruit salad and yoghurt bowl) and a slightly later lunch, I don’t seem to be hungry for dinner, regardless of what activities I may have done during the day. Often I’m not even hungry for breakfast so I usually force myself to eat that otherwise that is way too long without food for me!

I drink a lot of water throughout the day so perhaps this helps to fill me up.

Don’t worry, I make sure I get enough fruits and veggies each day.

And a coconut.
