Reflections

or: Photos / writing or writing / photos

I’ve been flicking through my photos from the past week trying to decide what I would write for today. There are not many photos to choose from aside from those taken with friends who are visiting from HK at the moment and some food photos. The rest of are imports from Whatsapp that others have sent to me. These include fish, crabs, eels, slugs, keys to a new apartment, a new cafe, and a restaurant card.

For someone that is having a pretty good time of things right now, I have taken suprisingly few photos to remind myself of it in the years to come. And that’s one of the 974 reasons why I like to write. My writing isn’t just confind to this blog. It is all over the place. Sometimes it’s sporadic but it is always around.

I find reading what I’ve written can conjure more memories than what a photo does for me though that does depend on what I have written about. It if is something out of my own life, I can easily picture where I was when I wrote it and can feel the same things I felt when I wrote it, even if it was years ago. This can be both good and bad!

I can smell what was cooking or what I may have been eating at the time and I can hear the outside noises that generally act as white noise while I type or handwrite (preferred tool is my fountain pen – I have a favourite one of these too). I generally can’t picture what I am wearing though and since I don’t remember ever writing naked, I’m not sure why this is the case. Perhaps if I wrote naked that would be one less thing to try to recall…

I can usually remember what music I have had playing too or if there was none. I’m not sure why this is the case and to be fair, I have absolutely no way of confirming this or most of the rest of my memories either. Same as photos  though I am more likely to be accurate in remembering the clothes I wore if that happens to be in the picture too!

Today I took a selfie of one of my HK friends and I underwater. I’ve been trying to perfect underwater selfies. Today I managed one that had both of our faces fully in it – this is a first!

I will definitely remember this dive and will write about it somewhere else too. That will be for my eyes only.

I was wearing multiple layers of neoprene…
