(Can I) Find The Right Words (To Say)

or: A Mauritian concert with a difference

I went to another concert last Sunday.

This one featured many Mauritian artists who are quite famous here. The ones you hear regularly on the radio; the ones you’d buy the CD for if people still bought CDs.

I have seen some of these artists perform before though not quite like this.

This time, they all shared one band, each sung one or two songs before switching out to another singer who did the same and they all rotated through a few times.

Unlike most concerts, the band and the singers were all on the floor, the same level as the audience, no protective barrier or bouncers protecting them from the crowd. They were actively in it and encouraging people to dance with them and around them.

And people did.

They were toddlers, they were octogenarians, they were everything in between and most had a dance. Many also sang along with all the songs.

I surprised myself knowing bits of quite a few songs so I could sing along too. That said, I could also have replaced the real words with what I thought they were saying and created an entirely new song.

There is an added degree of difficulty for me since the songs are in Creole. I like a challenge!

It doesn’t matter.

I had fun.

Maybe by next time I’ll know the right words.

Thanks to Blondie for the title to this post.
