Feeling Hot Hot Hot

or: Some electronics have turned against me

This week I’ve had a weird impact on a few appliances which has resulted in one fire, one overly heated portion of mashed potato and one gadget that hasn’t decided yet if it will work again or not.

I’m still alive.

The potato on the other hand…. Since it started out mashed, its days were already over.

One of my simple pleasures is a nice hot shower. In many places I’ve lived, it’s been a gas shower where the gas runs directly into the house. Where I am now, the gas is in a bottle which we need to replace whenever I start having cold showers.

We also need to make sure the gas hot water heater has working batteries.

For a few weeks, we seemed to be replacing these quite frequently so figured that the gas heater was the problem.

It was time to replace it so that’s exactly what happened.

I had my first shower in it and it was blissful.

The water ran hot instantly.

What was not blissful was when I turned it off.

I thought the tap was fully off, the shower gave it’s final protest squirt of water and steam since it seems to prefer being left on, and I hung the shower hose down to let the remainder run out.

It then started spewing out steam and I began to think I was in a sauna.

I moved the tap off as I thought I may not have turned it far enough.

I had.

I looked into the gas heater to find the flames were still burning.

I yelled out for help as I’m not sure what to do when this happens aside from making sure I’m out of the shower and that nothing else can be burnt.

I have no idea where the gas switch is to turn it off.

Then the fire in the gas heater shot up through the gaps in the top.

Help arrived and the gas was turned off.

I now know how to do this.

The next day I was heating some food in the microwave. While that happened, I prepared drinks.

The customary beeping came indicating that the microwave had finished doing its job. However something in the microwave seemed to disagree and decided to keep cooking though the plate remained still.

I could hear a low hum and didn’t think anything of it for a few minutes.

And then I had mashed potato that more resembled a very runny gratin.

The next day, my iPad was working the same as it always does. I was due for a House Party later that night so I plugged it in to charge. That app loves power.

I left it on for a couple of hours and went to turn it on.

Black screen of death.

I’ve tried all the reset methods online and now I need to take it to a technician.

I use this gadget for blogging, research, Netflix and social media.

So where does this leave me?

I have a shower and a microwave that may or may not be possessed and my screen time is down significantly.

I’m a bit nervous about touching any gadgetry at the moment too.
